Description

Ivy Cottage is a late 19th century, symmetrical single-storey structure with five bays. It consists of a three-bay cottage that is connected to a two-bay laundry on the north side. The entrance is located in the center of the main (eastern) elevation, flanked by dormer windows. The building forms a rough U-shape, with an L-shaped stable and cartshed to the left and a brick extension to the right at the rear (west). The exterior is made of roughly coursed and snecked, squared red whinstone rubble, with squared surrounds and quoins, and mortar courses highlighted in white lime mortar.

The windows feature multi-pane and four-pane glazing in timber sash and case style. The roof has coped gables and ridge stacks, with a tall brick stack on the brick extension. Decorative cast-iron rainwater goods with hoppers are also present.

Inside, the laundry retains its original fixtures, including a Caithness flagstone floor with a central drain, a range of large porcelain sinks on the eastern wall, and a round elevated iron water tank in the southeast corner. There is a large round brick boiling tub and an adjoining glazed brick sink tub on the southern wall. A five-cabinet cast-iron drying press is located in the brick extension at the rear, with cast-iron runners set in the floor, along with a free-standing cast-iron and wood mangle. A timber stair leads to the center of the cottage, and the principal rooms feature timber panelled walls and window recesses.
