Description
1 and 2 Riverside Cottages, located at Balmoral Castle, were originally built in 1853 by J Smith, with alterations and additions made in 1862. In 1927, the building was converted into cottages by Whitaker. This two-storey, U-shaped structure was formerly a laundry and wash-house and is situated to the northeast of the stables. The exterior is harled with exposed granite margins and quoin strips.
The south elevation features a symmetrical six-bay design. The bays to the right of the center include a window on the ground floor of a projecting gable at the outer right, a window on each floor of the left return, and a broad four-panelled timber door with a four-part fanlight below a shallow horizontal window in the re-entrant angle to the left. There is also a further window below a similar shallow window in the bay to the left. The bays to the left of the center mirror this arrangement, but bays two and three are aligned more closely.
The east and west elevations each have three bays, with windows in the outer bays at each floor flanking blocked openings at the center. The north elevation mirrors the south elevation.
The windows are timber sash and case with 6- and 12-pane glazing patterns. The roof is covered with graded grey slates, featuring ashlar-coped skews and moulded skewputts, as well as coped and margined gablehead and ridge stacks with cans. There are also small modern rooflights.
