Description
The Joiner's Workshop, also known as the Iron Ballroom, is a building located at Balmoral Castle, constructed in 1851 by Edward T Bellhouse and Company, produced by Eagle Foundry in Manchester. Originally designed as a ballroom, it now serves as a carpenter's workshop. The structure features corrugated iron sheets set on a concrete base, framed by panelled cast-iron pilasters with stylised capitals that support a cornice above the eaves gutter.
The entrance is located at the gabled end and includes a sliding machinery door, topped by a small-pane strip fanlight. The building has seven bays on each side, with four windows on each side consisting of flush, 16-pane timber casement windows. There are also two modern, fixed-pane, horizontal windows added to the left return elevation. The rear gable end is blank, while the building is adorned with scalloped barge boards and finials. The roof is made of corrugated material and includes flush rooflights and decorative brattishing, along with a gabled ventilator at the mid ridge, also featuring brattishing.
Inside, the workshop is lined with timber boarding and has a coombed roof that is embrasured to the rooflights.
