Description
The former Telephone Exchange, now known as The Surgery, was built in 1861 and is a small, single-storey building with a gabled roof and Tudor architectural details. It is located to the east of the stables at Balmoral Castle and is constructed from stugged, coursed granite with a base course and polished dressings.
The west gable features chamfered edges surrounding a central two-leaf door with a hoodmould, flanked by blind gunloops and a blank shield at the top of the gable. On the south elevation, there is a panelled door at the centre with a letterbox fanlight, flanked by windows. The north elevation has a central blind arrowslit, also flanked by windows. The east gable contains two blind arrowslits.
The building has 12-pane glazing in sash and case windows and is topped with graded grey slates. The gable ends have coped skews with kneelers and scroll-bracketed skewputts, along with ball finials. A stone stack is positioned at the centre of the ridge.
