Description
4 Dairy Cottages and Offices at Balmoral Castle were built between 1862 and 1863, with additions made in 1865. This single-storey and attic cottage features Tudor details and has gabled offices located behind it. The building is constructed from coursed granite with polished dressings and includes a base course.
The northeast elevation is symmetrical with five bays, featuring a central gabled entrance bay that has a panelled two-leaf door and a window in the gablehead. On either side of the entrance, there are later bipartite windows and a small window in the outer bays. The gabled return elevations have pointed arch windows in the attic and blind arrowslits at the ground level, with a small window to the left of the southwest elevation.
To the northwest, there are three irregular gables of the former cowhouse and offices arranged at the rear, two of which have tall segmental-arched carriage openings. The windows are fitted with 4-pane glazing in sash and case style. The roof is covered with graded grey slates and includes modern rooflights. The building features ashlar coped skews with bracketed skewputts and gablehead stacks.
