Description

Garbh Allt Shiel is a picturesque cottage built between 1880 and 1882, with extensions made after 1896. It is a single-storey building with a gabled roof, featuring a strong horizontal emphasis. The main block has a rectangular plan and is connected to U-shaped service wings at the rear. The exterior is constructed of stugged granite ashlar, with a base course and deeply overhanging eaves that are decorated with brackets.

On the east elevation, the cottage was originally designed with three bays but was extended by one bay on the left and to the right after 1896. The left of center features a broad gabled bay that is slightly advanced, which includes a stone mullioned tripartite window. There is a panelled door with a two-pane fanlight closely flanking it to the right, alongside a tripartite timber mullioned and transomed window. To the outer right is a blank wall-plane of a discreet extension beyond the stack, while a single bay addition is recessed slightly to the outer left with a timber mullioned bipartite window.

The north elevation has six bays, with an advanced lop-sided gable on the outer left from the post-1896 extension, featuring a timber mullioned bipartite window to the left and a door with a narrow window on the return to the right. There is a door flanking to the right and two windows in the bays on either side of the center. The outer right has a slightly advanced, broad gabled bay with two windows.

The south elevation includes a three-bay service wing on the left, which has a narrower window at the center shielded by eaves that gable over as a canopy, along with narrow windows on the return elevations. The center has a recess with a panelled door flanked to the right by a window. The outer right features a broad, advanced gable with a single window at the center, which masks and extends from the original mirror of the service wing to the left.

The cottage has sash and case windows with horizontal-pane and small-pane glazing. Timber brackets support the overhanging eaves, which are adorned with pendant ball finials. The roof is covered with grey slates and has a lead ridge. The granite stacks at the wallheads are batter-coped and topped with tall, ornate cans that feature barley sugar, honeycomb, and octagonal designs.

An outbuilding to the southwest is a single-storey and loft structure with a three-bay L-plan design, featuring slatted timber and a granite base course with a granite wall to the south. It has boarded timber doors and one sliding door, with a piend-roofed loft opening to the north. The outbuilding predominantly has four-pane timber sash and case windows and is also covered with grey slates, with a gable sack to the south and rooflights.
