Description

This is a mid-19th century stalker’s cottage that was substantially extended between 1866 and 1869, along with the addition of stables, a cellar, and a coalhouse, as well as a keeper's cottage and offices in 1867-8. The main house is a two-storey, U-plan building with a small courtyard enclosed to the northwest by single-storey outbuildings.

The house is constructed of stugged, squared granite with a base course. The southeast elevation is symmetrical with three bays. The centre bay features a panelled door and a two-pane fanlight above, with a cornice and three inscribed panels over the door. The original crenellated parapet was altered with the insertion of side panels. A dormerheaded window breaks the eaves above. The outer bays are broad and gabled, each with a corniced, canted, lead-roofed window at ground level, and three grouped windows on the first floor; the centre light is larger, and the outer lights are blinded. Shield panels are present in the gableheads.

The southwest elevation (extended after 1868) has four bays, the two bays to the left forming a keeper's cottage. A broad, gabled bay projects centrally, with a window to each floor, flanked by blind arrowslits. A bay to the right also has a window to each floor, with a dormerhead at the first floor. Narrower bays to the left replicate the central and right bays, with the advanced bay featuring a segmental-headed door, a fanlight to a pend, and a stack at the gablehead. A gabled return of a single-storey outbuilding abuts to the outer left.

The northeast elevation features a gabled bay projecting centrally, with a door flanked by blind arrowslits and a two-pane fanlight above. There are three windows above, the centre one being larger, and the right one blinded. A single bay to the outer left has a window to each floor, and a dormerhead at the first floor. To the right, a narrow window is located to the left, with a glazed arrowslit window above; another window is located to the outer right, with a dormerhead at the first floor.

The courtyard elevations exhibit a varied arrangement of windows, blinded openings, and dormerheads, and include a pend. The outbuildings consist of two gabled blocks joined to the north of the house. The rear of the outbuildings is blank, with three doors, a narrow window, and a blind arrowslit on the southwest side. The court elevation shows a lower, narrower stable, cellar, and coalhouse range, with a stack in the east corner.

The cottage is in an L-plan configuration and is single-storey with a store to the rear. The southwest elevation features a gabled stone porch at the centre, a door on the return to the right, and a window to the southwest. Windows are in the flanking bays. Blank gable returns and a narrow window are on the rear. A lower, later wing of store is adjoined to the right at the rear, with an off-centre door to the southeast.

Windows are timber cross-mullioned and transomed, and sash and case with small-pane and four-pane glazing to the rear elevations. The roof is covered in graded grey slates. Gablet coped skews are on the main house, while the remaining gables have flat-coped skews; scroll-bracketed skewputts and ball finials are also present. Clay ridge tiles and coped stacks on gables, ridges and wallheads are visible.

A boat slip, dating to circa 1870, is located to the southeast of the house on Loch Muick and consists of two rubble jetties flanking a launch slip.
