Description

Tanlaw Cottage is a picturesque cottage built in the late 19th century or early 20th century. It is two stories high with three bays and has a rectangular plan. The cottage features gabled dormers that break the eaves and has a later 20th century flat-roofed extension at the rear, creating an L-shape. At the back, there is a freestanding single-storey wash house and store, which are enclosed by garden walls. The exterior is made of squared, coursed sandstone ashlar with droved long and short quoins and window margins, along with projecting cills. The entrance includes a two-leaf timber boarded door with a fanlight above.

The windows are predominantly timber sash and case, featuring 12-pane glazing. There are rectangular ashlar ridge stacks with advanced lower courses and plain cans, as well as a similarly styled wallhead stack. The roof is piended with grey slate and includes flat-roofed, lead cheeked dormers on the sides, along with painted metal rainwater goods.

Inside, the cottage has a good vernacular decorative scheme with the original room layout preserved. The hall features some tongue and groove panelling, and all rooms have four-panelled doors and a turned spindle timber stair. There are some cast-iron fireplaces with timber chimneypieces, and the scullery includes a range while the pantry has timber shelving and hanging hooks.

The ancillary building and boundary walls consist of a single-storey, three-bay droved ashlar range that includes a wash house, coal shed, and W.C., each with a timber boarded door. There is also a lean-to with a corrugated roof and a later gable-ended garage at the northeast end. A small coped ashlar wall with a barred gate encloses the yard at the rear of the house.
