Description
This is a corniced, square-plan monument dated 1844 designed by William Cockburn, Mason and Carver. It commemorates Anna Maria Griffith. The monument stands on a stepped base and is constructed from ashlar sandstone from the New Quarry, Hendersyde. The monument includes carved shield and leaf details, and inscribed panels to each face. An original footed urn from the top of the monument lies adjacent.
The east-facing elevation contains an inscription detailing Anna Maria Griffith's birth at Hendersyde Park on 2nd October 1814, her death in Leamington, Warwickshire on 8th July 1831, and her burial in the parish church vault at Leamington. It also quotes from scripture and describes her character.
The south-facing elevation features verses composed by Anna Maria Griffith during a carriage journey shortly before her death. These lament her impending demise whilst expressing hope for a glorious afterlife.
The third inscription is composed by her mother and expresses sorrow at her passing but comfort in her salvation.
The fourth inscription acknowledges the monument's erection by Richard Griffith, Maria Jane Griffith and John Waldie in July 1844.
