Description
West Lodge at Hendersyde Park is an early 19th century single-storey classical lodge building with a rectangular plan and a rear extension that creates a near square shape. The building is constructed of dressed sandstone ashlar, featuring architraved surrounds, while the rear extension is made of droved and plain ashlar with smooth margins around the windows.
The principal elevation on the northeast side has an advanced central bay that includes an architraved door surround and a two-leaf timber door topped with a four-pane letterbox fanlight. There are architraved windows with plain sills on either side. A base course and a mutuled cornice run along the entire building. The southeast and northwest returns have similarly styled single bays.
On the southwest rear elevation, there is a near blind wall with a door and a small window to the left, along with two windows of different sizes on the northwest return and a pair of matched windows on the southeast return. The building features 12-pane timber sash and case windows, most of which still have their original internal shutters. The roof is piended slate with later replacement ridgings. Originally, there were cast iron rainwater goods, with gutters concealed by a low parapet on the cornice, but some of these have been replaced in later work. A tall central ashlar stack with a lozenge plan supports a pair of mismatched chimney cans.
The lodge is complemented by a pair of sandstone ashlar quadrant walls, which have undergone some later repairs, and these terminate in square ashlar gatepiers that feature a decorative frieze below a moulded cornice, topped with pyramidal caps. Additionally, there is a harled random rubble boundary wall with semi-circular stone copes extending southwest from the pier, and a plainer rubble wall that returns northwest along the policy boundary.
