Description
West Lodge and Gate-Piers at Arniston House is an earlier 19th century single-storey lodge with a rectangular plan, featuring three bays and later additions and alterations. The southeast elevation is constructed from droved, coursed sandstone ashlar, while the remaining sides are made of random rubble with polished dressings. The building has a base course, eaves course, and pedimented gables, with raised margins and strip quoins.
The northeast entrance elevation is asymmetrical with two bays. There is a window in the left bay that has chamfered reveals, and a two-leaf boarded timber replacement door in the right bay. The northwest elevation is also asymmetrical, featuring a two-pane window off-center to the left. Gatepiers are located to the outer left, and boundary walls extend to the outer right. The southwest elevation is obscured by a late 20th century addition. The southeast elevation is symmetrical with three bays, each bay containing a window set in a segmental arched recess with voussoirs, and a blind window in the center. To the left is a coped, coursed, droved wall. A late 20th century single-storey and basement addition is located to the outer left, featuring broached cement facing, a slate roof, and irregular fenestration on the northwest elevation, with a doorway off-center to the right of the right return, accessible by five steps. The remainder of the building was not seen in 1998.
The lodge predominantly features two-pane timber replacement casement windows, a grey slate roof with a lead ridge, and ashlar coped skews. There is a polished ashlar ridge stack with paired octagonal coped flues and circular cans, as well as a coped gablehead stack with a circular can on the southwest. Cast iron rainwater goods are also present.
The interior was not seen in 1998.
The gatepiers and boundary walls consist of a coursed, polished ashlar gateway to the northeast of the house, which is corniced and topped with stepped concave pyramidal caps, although the ball finials are missing. The gateway is flanked by two coped pedestrian gateways, one of which to the east has been infilled. There are boarded timber replacement gates. The boundary walls to the northeast and southwest of the house are made of rubble with rubble coping.
