Description

The British Telecom Building, formerly known as the Scotstoun Telephone Exchange, is a 2-storey, 5-bay Tudorbethan structure dating from around 1930, located at 536 Anniesland Road in Glasgow. The building is constructed from red sandstone bull-faced rubble, which is squared and snecked, featuring ashlar dressings and a base course. It has stone mullions and transoms, relieving arches, and a moulded eaves course. There is a rear wing that has been painted and appears to be a later addition.

The principal block is a single pile design. The south elevation is nearly symmetrical and includes gabled outer bays. The outer right bay features a Tudor-arched, corniced doorway with a part moulded surround, fluted consoles, and an obelisk-flanked overdoor panel that is blank. It has a panelled door with a small window to the right and a tripartite window to the left at ground level, along with bipartite windows on the first floor that rise into the gableheads. The three inner bays consist of bipartite windows at ground level and smaller bipartite windows on the first floor under the eaves. There is a square timber shuttered recess below the window to the penultimate right, which is presumably a coal chute.

The east side elevation features a gable with paired bipartite windows in the centre and left, and a larger transomed bipartite stair window to the right, above a small under stair window. The west gabled elevation has a door at ground level to the left and a narrow window to the right, with a bipartite transomed window at the first floor centre flanked by small windows.

The building has metal-framed, small-pane casement windows and a grey slate roof with ashlar coped skews and block bracketed skewputts, along with an ashlar ridge.
