Description

Jordanhill College of Education, designed by H and D Barclay architects in 1913, is a symmetrical courtyard-plan college building featuring gable details. It stands three storeys tall, with taller terminal bays and a central emphasis. The facade consists of 31 bays arranged in a pattern of 3-10-5-10-3, with a taller central pavilion that includes a four-storey tower at the outer bays. The building is constructed with a bull-faced sandstone base course and stugged red sandstone upper courses, accented by polished margins and quoins.

The central pavilion features canted windows at the outer tower-bays, which rise to three storeys. The third floor has semi-circular windows set within square corniced towers topped with parapets, above which rise lead spires. The inner three bays are crowned by a pinnacled pediment. At the ground level, steps lead up to three square-headed doorways, with the central bay flanked by engaged columns, all set in polished masonry. The first and second-floor windows are bipartite, while the outer three-bay pavilions have a two-storey canted window in the center, three single transomed windows on the second floor, and tripartite attic windows set in the gable over the center bay.

The ground floor features depressed-arch windows, while the first and second floors have tripartite mullioned and transomed windows. A continuous moulded band course runs over the ground and at the first-floor cills. The building is topped with a deep parapet adorned with gablet finials and slate roofs. The flanks are similarly detailed, arranged in 13 bays with a pattern of 3-7-3. An off-centre depressed arch leads to the courtyard.
