Description

Whiteinch Homes, built around 1895, is designed in the Scots Renaissance style and follows the almshouse model. The building is two stories high and features a 13-bay main front with north and south wings that create a courtyard layout. It is constructed from red snecked rubble with ashlar dressings and predominantly has sash and case windows with glazing bars in the upper panes. A plinth forms a cill band at the ground floor.

The main elevation has bays arranged in a pattern of 1-4-3-4-1, with the central and end bays being taller and more prominent. There is a central arched entrance with a double cast-iron gate, and sculpted consoles support a die frieze that bears the lettering "WHITEINCH HOMES." The flanking windows are pedimented, and above them is a three-light stone-mullioned and transomed window, which is flanked by dormers featuring shaped pedimented heads that are repeated in the second-floor set-back bays. The entrance bay is topped with a shaped pediment that has a sculpted tympanum. The ground floor has a cornice, and there is a cill band at the first floor. The outer bays of the set-back sections have tall arched windows, while the outer pavilions are adorned with large shaped pediments that include antefixae obelisks, escutcheons, and finials.

The east and west return elevations feature outer gabled sections that project, with a central pedimented window and simple detailing. The courtyard elevations repeat the main detailing, including shaped pedimented dormers.
