Description

The North British Diesel Engine Works, located at 739 South Street in Glasgow, was designed by architect J Galt and built between 1913 and 1914. This steel-framed building, constructed of brick and glass, is inspired by Peter Behrens' A E G Turbine Factory in Berlin from 1909. The main shop features a tall, 13-bay frontage facing the river, topped with a flattened mansard roof. The eastern elevation has a substantial flat-roofed range, while the gable ends are glazed, with an entrance at ground level. The upper windows are separated from the lower ones by a broad brick band, and the gable head includes lunettes that overhang the lower elevation. A large arched entrance is located at the western end of the flat-roofed section, and the areas between the steel frames are glazed.

Inside, there is a large central aisle with a gallery at the eastern end. The steel frame is pivoted at the base and at the gallery level on the eastern side to accommodate movement within the structure. The interior features lightweight lattice roof trusses in a mansard form and a glazed roof that once had sliding roof panels. There are fish-bellied travelling cranes and various large machine tools, including a planer. The building was painted mustard yellow in 1984.
