Description
The Partick and Whiteinch War Memorial, designed by Francis William Doyle-Jones in 1922, is located in Victoria Park. This memorial features a tall rectangular granite plinth that supports a bronze statue of Victory. It is set within a 19th-century park and faces a boating pond. The memorial has a broad, steep base and a stepped plinth, with a stepped, moulded, and concave top that is surmounted by a female sculpture with outspread wings, standing on a globe and holding a wreath. The side piers project and are adorned with carved scrolls at the top. The east face of the memorial bears the inscription: 'OUR / BELOVED DEAD / TO THE GLORY OF GOD / AND IN / GRATEFUL & EVERLASTING / REMEMBRANCE / OF THE MEN OF / PARTICK AND WHITEINCH / WHO FELL / IN THE GREAT WAR / 1914-1918 / 1930 - 1945', with a carved sword entwined with a wreath above it. At the base, there is an additional inscription that reads 'WE WILL REMEMBER THEM'.
