Description
The Tipton War Memorial is a borough war memorial located in Victoria Park, dating from around 1921. It is constructed from grey granite and takes the form of an obelisk that stands on a square, tapered plinth with a stepped platform. The obelisk is plain and is separated from the plinth by a large-scale cavetto moulding. The tapered sides of the polished plinth feature gilded Gothic script inscriptions: ‘Resurgam / +Laus Deo+’ on the south side, ‘Our / Glorious / Dead’ on the west side, ‘1914-1919 / The / Great War’ on the north side, and ‘Honoured / for / Evermore’ on the east side. Additionally, the north side of the upper step is inscribed in Roman script: ‘AND / 1939-1945 / THE WORLD WAR’. The plinth is elevated above two steps, and beneath it is a square platform.
