Description
The war memorial, built around 1920, is made of dressed granite and features bronze tablets, a shield, and a figure. It is designed as a tapered flat-topped obelisk, with a fluted band at the top and a key-moulded band at the base. The memorial stands on a deep chamfered plinth, which is accompanied by one square and two octagonal steps. Atop the obelisk is a figure of Victory, holding a trumpet in her right hand and a wreath in her left. On the east face of the obelisk, there is a carved wreath above the applied metal lettering that reads "TO THE GLORIOUS DEAD," along with a shield depicting blast furnaces and a shipyard in relief. There is also a tablet with applied lettering on the east face of the plinth. The names of those who fell in the Great War from 1914 to 1919 are recorded on raised-lettered tablets on the north, south, and west faces of the plinth.
