Description

This First World War memorial was erected in 1922, with subsequent additions following the Second World War. The memorial is constructed from Portland stone, with sandstone steps and flagstones. It is located at the end of Smith’s Dock Road, within Smith’s Dock Park, and is positioned at the head of a short avenue of yew trees. The memorial consists of a square plinth with two inset pilasters, creating a cruciform shape, set upon a two-stepped base. This supports a tapered cenotaph, which features reeded pilasters and a carved wreath at its top. The front, or south-west facing, side of the memorial carries an inscription commemorating the First and Second World Wars, listing the names of those who died, and noting it was erected by Smith’s Dock Company Limited in memory of their employees from all departments. Seven bronze plaques are set at a slight angle within a stone surround in front of the memorial. These plaques bear inscriptions similar to the main cenotaph inscription and also include a dedication from the Friends of Smith’s Dock Park War Memorial dated July 2011. The memorial stands on two sandstone steps within a flagged area, which is accessed by a flight of sandstone steps flanked by a low plinth wall with short piers. The C20 gated steel railings surrounding the sandstone flagged area are excluded from the listing.
