Description

The Ship Inn is a public house located on the south side of Eston High Street. The building consists of a pair of cottages, with the right side dating from the mid-18th century and the left side from the early to mid-19th century. The right part has an early to mid-19th century rear extension. The exterior features dressed sandstone, while the rear of the left-hand part is constructed of brick. The left end and ridge stacks have been rebuilt in brick. The roof is covered with renewed clay pantiles, which are sprocketed at the eaves and include a stone ridge, gable copings, and a shaped kneeler at the left end.

The building is two storeys high with a basement, featuring two windows on the left side and three on the right. A mid-20th century door is located up two steps in the second bay, with a passage opening and a mid-20th century metal gate at the right end. There is a blocked basement light in the first bay. The ground floor has late 20th century casements in the original openings, while the first floor has renewed sashes with glazing bars. The windows on the right part have crude flat surrounds. There are mid to late 20th century painted sign boards between the floors and a hanging sign at the junction. A continuous moulded eaves cornice runs along the top of the building, and there is a two-storey extension at the rear of the right part.
