Description

The blacksmith's workshop, located north of Number 45 on Eston High Street, dates from the mid-18th century, with a stable extension added around 1800. It is constructed from coursed sandstone rubble, with a dressed sandstone extension. The roof is made of clay pantiles and features stone ridge copings, along with a renewed brick ridge stack and another stack at the southeast corner. The workshop is a single storey with four bays on the west face. It has horizontal sash windows with glazing bars and external boarded shutters, alternating with boarded stable doors, including a reduced cart opening at the right end. Inside, the forge occupies the right-hand part and contains two brick hearths with stepped brick flues, and the hearth in the southeast corner still has its bellows. There are timber and iron sheds adjoining the rear and ends, but these are not of special interest. The property has been occupied by the Snowdon family since the 15th or 16th century and was in a dilapidated state at the time of resurvey.
