Description
The Church of St Matthew is a church built in 1876 by J H Gibbons. It is constructed of brick in English bond and features a tile roof. The building includes a nave with a clerestory, a lower two-storey west porch, a lower chancel with a five-sided apse, very narrow aisles, a north vestry, and a south-east tower. The west wall has triple stepped lancets beneath the gable and single lancets on each side below the parapets. The central doorway features a pointed arch and a stone tympanum carved with a figure of St Matthew. The nave consists of six bays, with paired lancets in the aisles and triple lancets in the clerestory. The tower includes angle buttresses, a south doorway, two lancet bell openings on each side, and a pierced parapet adorned with corner pinnacles and gargoyles.
Inside, there is a west gallery within a pointed archway. The six-bay arcades consist of pointed brick arches that spring from round piers with foliated capitals. The open timber roof features arched principals supported by corbels, along with vertical iron rods and iron tie rods. The pointed brick chancel arch has engaged corbelled shafts as responds, also with foliated capitals. The apse roof has timber ribs that spring from corbels located between the windows. An organ is positioned on the south side, set within a brick archway. The east windows contain early 20th-century glass depicting Christ and the four evangelists.
