Description

The Fountain Inn Public House is an early 19th-century public house located on Owen Street in Tipton. It is constructed of brick, rendered at the front and painted at the rear, topped with a slate roof. The building stands two storeys high with two bays. The facade features boxed sashes with glazing bars on the first floor. The ground floor has a timber public house front, likely from the late 19th century, which includes pilasters and an entablature, along with a narrow window on the right that may have replaced a door. The doorway, framed by a mid-20th-century surround, is situated between the two main ground floor windows. The facade connects with No 52 to the right, which has a shop front on the ground floor and two boxed sashes with glazing bars above. There are chimneys on the gables of the Fountain Inn and to the right of No 52, which has a lower roof line. At the rear, there are two wings featuring brick dentil eaves and some sashed windows with glazing bars. From 1836, the Inn served as the headquarters of William Perry, known as the "Tipton Slasher," who was the boxing champion of England from 1850 to 1857. Internally, the Fountain Inn extends above part of No 52.
