Description

The Church of St John, located at the junction of St John's Road and Upper Church Lane in Tipton, was built in the 1850s, featuring a tower that dates back to 1683 and possibly earlier. The church is constructed of brick, with the tower made of sandstone rubble and topped with a slate roof. It consists of a west tower, a nave with a continuous chancel, a south porch, and a north porch with a vestry.

The tower has three stages, adorned with three string courses and an embattled parapet. It includes bell openings, each featuring two chamfered trefoiled lights, and a west window with a single chamfered pointed light. On the south side of the tower, there is a blocked doorway, above which is a sundial plaque. The plaque is set within a segmental pediment and bears the inscription: "This steeple was built Anno Domini 1683 John Nightingale William Clare Church Wardens." The masonry at the base of the tower is believed to be medieval.

The nave is composed of five bays made of blue bricks, which are recessed between red brick attached piers, and features a similar eaves band supported by a corbel table. The windows are paired chamfered lancets with red brick surrounds and iron lattice glazing. The east bay on the south side is covered by a porch with a pitched roof, which has paired east windows resembling those of the nave. On the north side, the east bay is covered by a rendered addition, and there is a rendered porch and vestry against the north side of the tower. The east wall of the chancel is fitted with three lancet lights.

Inside, the nave features four bolted queen-post trusses and a painted stone font designed in a gothic style.
