Description
The War Memorial on Church Street in Inverkeithing was designed by Peter Reid in 1923, with additional commemorative plaques added after 1945. This granite monolithic memorial features an elongated, moulded Celtic Cross on a splayed foot, which is adorned with a carving of a wreath on the west side. The cross stands atop a tall, chamfered, and stepped square pedestal. Each face of the pedestal has bronze plaques that commemorate the names of fallen servicemen and women. The west plaque is inscribed with "TO THE GLORY OF GOD / AND IN LOVING MEMORY / OF THE MEN / OF INVERKEITHING AND / DISTRICT WHO FELL IN / THE GREAT WAR / 1914-1919," while the east plaque reads "TO THE GLORY OF GOD / AND IN LOVING MEMORY / OF THE MEN & WOMEN / OF INVERKEITHING AND / DISTRICT WHO FELL IN / THE WORLD WAR / 1939-1945." Below each bronze panel, there are small oval copper discs featuring a moulded image of a ship, which is the official symbol of Inverkeithing Burgh. Additionally, the foot of the pedestal is carved with the lettering "THEIR NAME LIVETH / FOR EVERMORE."
