Description

Inverkeithing Library, designed by Sir Frank Mears and Partners between 1969 and 1971, is a Late Modern public library with a single and two-storey, roughly octagonal plan. The building is partially sunk below Church Street to the west, with a small hall incorporated to the northeast of the plan, as the ground slopes to the east. It features rendered brick construction and a flush, plain concrete eaves course.

The library has three projecting box windows to the northwest, flanking glazed entrance doors to the left. At the centre of the plan is a partially glazed conical roof, with low pitched continuous horizontal glazing surrounding the building at the edge of the roof. There are double metal doors with a glazed panel to the far left at ground level on the southeast, which provide access to the hall, and continuous stepped horizontal metal framed glazing cantilevered above. The northwest side has irregular openings with a stepped entrance.

Inside, the library showcases a Scandinavian style. It features boarded timber cladding between deep vertical roof beams above the loans desk. There are recessed rectangular seating areas to the northwest, and the librarian's office to the southwest has a tall timber and glazed partition with decorative octagonal timber panels in the lower section. Timber book stacks are located to the east of the plan, with pine detailing throughout. The hall has plain plaster walls, concrete flooring, and a kitchen facility.
