Description

The War Memorial, located in the Esplanade Gardens on Victoria Street, was designed by Charles E Tweedie between 1921 and 1922, with the sculpture created by C d'O Pilkington Jackson. This memorial features a tall rectangular plinth made of Aberdeen granite, which supports a bronze statue of Victory. It is situated within 19th century pleasure gardens on a prominent corner site. The memorial has a broad stepped base, a stepped plinth, and a stepped, moulded, and concave top, which is surmounted by a female figure with outspread wings, holding a cross. There are inscribed bronze panels set within raised fielded panels on the plinth, with the eastern panel featuring scroll detail at the top. Additionally, bronze wreaths are placed on top of the plinth, which is inscribed with the years '1916-1919'.
