Description

The Madeira Hotel and Bank, located at 37 Victoria Street in Rothesay, Bute, is a building from the earlier to mid 19th century, with alterations made in the mid to later 20th century at the ground level. This rectangular-plan structure features a plain classical style and stands three stories tall with an attic corner block. The ground floor houses a bank, while the hotel occupies the upper levels, topped by a prominent mansard roof.

The building has a two-bay façade facing Victoria Street to the north and a five-bay side facing Tower Street to the west, with a recessed bowed corner. The ground floor showcases a polished granite pilastered shopfront, topped by a deep cornice. The first and second floors on the north side are finished in painted render, while the west side features painted, coursed droved sandstone. Notable architectural details include a raised base course, a raised cill course at the first floor, and corniced eaves. There is architraved rectangular-panel detailing between the upper floors on both the Victoria Street and Tower Street sides.

On the north elevation facing Victoria Street, the fenestration is regular. The corner features a slightly recessed full-height bow, with the bank entrance at ground level consisting of a two-leaf timber panelled door, an architraved timber surround, a block pediment, and an armorial panel above. This entrance is sheltered by an overhanging polygonal porch. The first and second floors have single windows, and a single dormer is present above.

The west elevation facing Tower Street includes a timber panelled door in the outer right bay, with a plate-glass fanlight above. The remaining bays to the left have single windows at ground level. There are single windows on both the first and second floors in three bays to the right of the centre, with single dormers in the penultimate bay and the outer right bay. A bipartite dormer is offset to the left of centre. There are blind bays at both floors in two bays to the left of centre.

The building features timber glazing on the ground floor, with 2- and 12-pane timber sash and case windows on the upper floors. The graded grey slate mansard roof is complemented by corniced wallhead stacks on the west side and various circular chimney cans.
