Description

Rothesay Pier Gentlemen's Public Toilets, built in 1899 for the Rothesay Harbour Trustees and refurbished in the late 20th century, is a rare and exceptional single-storey public convenience with a distinctive rectangular plan. The building features important decorative elements, with the male lavatory located to the south and the female lavatory to the north. The exterior is adorned with coloured, glazed bricks arranged in rectangular patterns, along with a glazed brick base course and eaves course. The moulded timber eaves incorporate rhones, and there are moulded bricks forming a segmental-arched door surround to the south. The entrances, which are slightly raised glazed bricks, are offset to the right of centre and are reproductions from the late 20th century.

On the eastern elevation, there is a segmental-arched timber panelled door at ground level, offset to the left of centre, with a shouldered, architraved door surround and a raised keystone. To the right of centre, a two-bay wing advances, breaking the eaves, and features two square-headed timber panelled doors centered at ground level, each with slightly raised stylised keystones.

Inside the male lavatory, as seen in 2010, the walls are lined with ceramic tiles that display foliate and geometric detailing beneath a dado. There is a roll-moulded architrave and a decorative frieze. The floor is a patterned ceramic mosaic featuring the Rothesay Burgh crest at the entrance. The facilities include 14 urinals along the outer walls, a central hexagonal Adamant urinal range, white enamel alcoves, and dark marble dressings. Above the wall-mounted urinal stalls, there are three glass-sided marble cisterns, and the plumbing is copper throughout. The western wall has cubicles with plain timber panelled doors set in architraved surrounds, and there are four heavy marble hand basins. The ceiling features metal roof girders and gas-light fittings.

The female lavatory has late 20th century fittings and was formerly a storage area. The building is topped with a graded grey slate piended and platformed roof, which includes tripartite rooflights above the male lavatory, and is decorated with cast-iron brattishing.
