Description

2, 4, 6, 8 West Princes Street is a mid to late 19th-century tenement building that has been refurbished in the late 20th century. This classically detailed, four-storey structure forms the end of a terrace and features shops at the ground level. It has five bays facing West Princes Street to the north and two bays on Watergate to the west, with a prominent bowed corner at the northwest.

The ground floor showcases Corinthian-pilastered arcaded shopfronts, which include a raised base course, timber panelling, a plain frieze, and a deep cornice for shop signage. The upper floors are finished in painted render and feature a deep cornice at the second floor. Above this, there is an attic storey with pedimented windows that break the eaves. The first-floor windows are architraved and corniced, while the second-floor windows are simply architraved. The third floor has triangular pedimented windows. There is a balustraded blocking course at the centre of the West Princes Street elevation.

On the north elevation, the ground floor has a shop front, with a part-glazed timber panelled door recessed to the right of centre, which serves the Bute House Hotel. A foliate wrought-iron lamp-stand is centred above this door. There are later doors in the bays to the left, with glazing set between them. The outer left features three-light canted windows on the first, second, and third floors, topped with an angular pediment and a ball finial. The outer right angle has a slightly recessed full-height bowed bay that includes a later door at ground level, single windows on the first and second floors, and a single window at the third floor with a triangular pediment and three ball-shaped finials.

The west elevation on Watergate has an arcaded shop at ground level and regular fenestration. The building predominantly features plate glass timber sash and case windows. The roof is covered in grey slate, with decorative rainwater goods beneath the third-floor cornice. There are corniced ridge and apex stacks to the east and south, along with various circular cans.
