Description

The Guildford Court Hotel, located at 1-5 Guildford Square in Rothesay, Bute, is an earlier 19th-century building designed in a classical style. This rectangular-plan, four-storey hotel is situated on a corner site and features a shop, post office, and licensed premises on the ground floor. The hotel has three bays facing Watergate to the west, three bays on Albert Place to the north, and three bays on West Princes Street to the south, with recessed bowed corners.

The exterior is finished with painted render and sandstone rubble at the rear, and it has painted margins. Notable architectural details include a raised base course, raised cills, and corniced eaves. The windows on the first and second floors are architraved and corniced on the north and west sides, while the third-floor windows have pilastered reveals. The south elevation features raised margins and projecting cills.

On the principal elevation facing Watergate, there is a later shopfront to the left and a later timber panelled door offset to the right of centre, topped with a fanlight. This entrance is flanked by decorative cast-iron brackets that support a large overhanging canopy. The post office is located to the left of the entrance, with licensed premises to the right. Each bay on the first, second, and third floors has single windows, and the outer left and right corners feature slightly recessed full-height bows with single windows on all floors.

The side elevation facing Albert Place has modern shops at ground level, with single windows in all bays on the first, second, and third floors. The rear elevation on West Princes Street includes licensed premises at ground level, with single windows in all bays above.

The building predominantly features later windows and is topped with a grey slate roof, which has corniced wallhead stacks on the north and west sides, along with various circular cans.
