Description
Failsworth War Memorial is a First World War memorial built around 1923 from Portland stone. It features a fluted column with colored decoration, topped by a bronze winged figure of Victory and a bronze laurel wreath.
The memorial stands on a stepped square stone plinth with an octagonal base. The main southeast face of the base has an inscription that reads "Remembrance 1914 1918," while the rear bears the inscription "They died in many lands that we may live here in peace." The fluted column tapers and curves anti-clockwise from the midpoint to a domed top, which is adorned with a vertical pattern of blue and green medallions and red waves within a green border. The bronze figure of Victory holds a laurel wreath and a staff, with the bronze wreath attached to the top of the column and the figure.
Unveiled on June 10, 1923, the memorial honors those who lost their lives during the First World War. The designer and the individual who unveiled the memorial remain unknown. The memorial is noted for its unusual colored decoration and significant architectural and historic interest.
