Description
Failsworth Lodge, now known as The Lancaster Sports and Social Club, is a house that dates back to 1770, as indicated by "JEB 1770" on the door lintel at the rear. The building is constructed of Flemish bond brick and features a slate roof. It has a double-depth plan with five bays and three storeys, plus a basement, with smaller two-storey wings set back on either side. A stone band runs at the basement level, and there is a modillion eaves cornice and blocking course.
The central entrance is approached by opposing flights of stone steps and features a six-panel door with a decorative fanlight and an open pediment supported by pilasters. The window openings have stone sills, cambered brick arches, and 20th-century casements, although four-pane sashes remain on the ground floor. There are noticeable fire escape stairs in front of the wings. The building has gable chimney stacks and hipped roofs on the wings that project at the rear. A small two-storey addition at the back has several blocked windows, but some retain 12-pane sashes.
Inside, the ground floor has been significantly altered, but it features a dogleg stair with a moulded rail and boxed-in balusters. The upper floors have six-panel doors and enriched mantels. The building was formerly a private school that is said to have been attended by Robert Peel.
