Description
Newton Silk Mill is a silk mill dated 1832, located on Holyoak Street in Newton Heath. The building is constructed of pink brick with sandstone lintels and has a rectangular plan, along with a stair-tower on the west side. It stands four storeys high, plus an attic and basement, and features five windows, including the stair-tower on the right. All windows now have 20th-century plastic-framed double-glazing. The gable includes a very large flat-topped lunette, and there is a prominent plaque between the second and third floor windows that reads "1832 / NEWTON SILK MILL." Inside, the mill boasts fireproof construction, with cast-iron columns supporting segmental barrel vaults that run parallel to the street, and a winder staircase located in a curved chamber.
