Description
The Church of Saint John, built between 1845 and 1846, was designed by E. H. Shellard for the Church Commissioners. It is constructed from hammer-dressed stone and features a slate roof. The church includes a nave with a clerestory and aisles, a west tower, and a chancel that is flanked by an organ chamber and a vestry.
The nave and aisles consist of six bays, each with a projecting plinth, a sill band, and corbelled eaves. Each bay is supported by a weathered buttress and features paired lancet windows beneath a continuous hoodmould. The clerestory is illuminated by spherical triangle lights, and there is a gabled north porch.
The tower is four stages high, with angled weathered buttresses. It has a door on the first stage, a two-light plate tracery window on the second stage, clock faces with elaborate gabled surrounds on the third stage, and two-light belfry openings. The tower culminates in a broach spire adorned with gabled lucarnes above a dogtooth-enriched band, which is decorated with corner gargoyles. The chancel is two bays long and features a three-lancet east window.
Inside, the nave arcade is supported by clustered columns with moulded capitals and bases. The arch-braced roof trusses rest on columnar corbels that have carved heads. There is an arcaded parapet to the west gallery, which is supported by cast-iron columns and now houses the organ. The interior also includes stained glass and timber fittings.
