Description
The Eastleigh War Memorial is a war memorial built in 1930. It was moved to its current location in 1969 and features a replacement winged victory sculpture from 2000.
Constructed from granite and stone, the memorial includes lead lettering, while the statue and plaques are made of bronze. The memorial consists of a roughhewn granite pedestal, a plinth, and a two-stepped base, which is elevated above two stone steps. At the top, it is crowned by a bronze figure of Winged Victory with arms raised.
The front face of the plinth displays painted lead lettering that reads "1914 – 1918 . 1939 – 1954/ TO OUR/ GLORIOUS DEAD." Inscribed on the first step of the base in lead lettering is the phrase: "AT THE GOING DOWN OF THE SUN/ AND IN THE MORNING/ WE WILL REMEMBER THEM." The second step features a bronze plaque inscribed with: "THE NAMES OF THE FALLEN ARE RECORDED IN/ ALL SAINTS CHURCH AND EASTLEIGH MUSEUM, HIGH STREET." A small bronze plaque on the top of the plinth states: "ANGEL OF VICTORY/ SCULPTOR/ JILL TWEED FRBS FRSA/ 2000." The memorial is enclosed with low metal railings.
It is situated within landscaped grounds that also include two additional memorial plinths from 2018.
