Description

The Woking War Memorial is a First World War memorial that was unveiled on 24 May 1922. It features a bronze statue created by the sculptor Francis William Doyle Jones, and is made of sandstone and bronze.

Located in the center of Jubilee Square, to the west of Christ Church, the memorial consists of a bronze statue of a winged Victory. This figure symbolizes glory and fame, holding a wreath of laurel leaves in her right hand and a palm branch in her left. The statue stands on a globe atop a pedestal adorned with carved foliate details. The pedestal steps down in two stages and is supported by a tall, square column made of sandstone, which rises from a plinth on a two-stepped base.

On the front (south-east) face of the column, there is a carved relief of an inverted Sword of Sacrifice, suspended from a scroll that drapes over two carved badges with foliate designs. Below this is an inscription that reads: "THE GREAT WAR/ 1914 – 1919/ REMEMBER WITH THANKSGIVING/ THE TRUE AND FAITHFUL MEN/ AND WOMEN OF THIS TOWN/ AND COUNTRYSIDE/ WHO IN THESE YEARS OF WAR/ WENT FORTH/ FOR/ GOD AND THE RIGHT./ THE NAMES OF THOSE/ WHO RETURNED NOT AGAIN/ ARE HERE INSCRIBED/ 'THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE'." The other faces of the column list the names of those commemorated.

At the base of the front face of the column, there is a small, carved wreath. Inscribed on the plinth underneath is a dedication for the Second World War: "AND/ THE WORLD WAR/ 1939 – 1945."

On the rear (north-west) face, there is another inscription at the base of the column that states: "DEDICATED IN VICTORIA GARDENS/ 1922/ REMOVED TO TOWN SQUARE/ 1975." All lettering is incised and painted black.
