Description
The Hospital of St Mary the Virgin Almshouses is a pair of almshouses built in 1858, with additional wings added in 1916 that match the original design. The building is constructed from snecked sandstone with ashlar dressings and features a high-pitched roof covered with graduated green slates, all in a Gothic style. It is two storeys high and the main range consists of ten bays. Most windows are paired cusped lancets with iron casements, while some first-floor windows have round-shouldered lintels, reflecting a 13th-century style. The north front and the wing eaves are accented by stone-coped gables. The south-east wing has groups of two or three cusped lancets under a wider arch, topped with a quatrefoil light. The south front features plain paired sash windows. Pointed-arched doorways are adorned with hoodmoulds and headstops, and decorative iron door furniture is present. Inscriptions and coats of arms are displayed above the doors.
