Description
Rye Hill House, located on the east side of Rye Hill in Newcastle upon Tyne, is a building that dates back to around 1840. Originally constructed as a house, it later served as a hospital and is now part of Newcastle College. The structure is made of sandstone ashlar and features a Welsh slate roof.
The building stands three storeys tall with four windows and two narrow end bays that extend over two storeys. A wide set of balustraded steps leads to a central glazed porch, which has double doors and wide sidelights supported by Tuscan pilasters beneath a frieze adorned with paterae. The ground-floor sashes are aproned and have round heads with archivolts and impost strings. The end sashes and those on the first floor are framed with architraves and bracketed hoods, while the second-floor sashes also have bracketed sills and architraves. The end bays contain narrow sashes.
Additional architectural details include a second-floor band, a dentilled cornice, and cornices, blocking courses, and pediments with side consoles on the end bays. The low-pitched hipped roof features a rear chimney made of ashlar. A wrought iron balcony is present on the first floor.
