Description

Earl Grey House is a building located on Grey Street in Newcastle upon Tyne, dating from around 1837. It was likely designed by John Wardle for Richard Grainger. The structure is made of sandstone ashlar and features a Welsh slate roof. It stands four storeys high, with some attics, and consists of 28 bays. The ground floor has been altered.

The building showcases a Giant Ionic Order at the ends and in the central five-bay pavilions, with pilasters marking each of the five end bays and attached columns in the central five, all of which are fluted. The right three columns of the centre are shorter, stepping up to accommodate a change in level. The windows are mostly sashes set in plain reveals, with some renewed and some featuring glazing bars. There is a sill band on the second floor, except in the two right centre bays, and a prominent cornice above the second-floor entablature. The top floor has sashes in plain reveals, with panelled pilasters in the pavilions, along with a top cornice and blocking course. A panelled parapet is located in the centre.

Nos. 19 to 27, which are part of Earl Grey House, have an inserted Mansard roof and attic windows, and they have been extensively rebuilt behind the facade, but they are included for group value.
