Description
Ward's Building is a Grade II listed structure located on the west side of High Bridge, comprising Nos. 31, 33, 35, and 37. Built in 1903, it was designed by Cackett, Burns Dick for Wards the printers. The building features red brick with ashlar detailing and has a slate Mansard roof with various brick stacks. It stands four storeys tall, plus attics, and has a four-bay façade.
The entrance includes an off-centre doorway with double panel doors and an elaborate stone surround, complete with a segmental pediment supported by exaggerated scroll brackets. To the left, there is a single shop front with a recessed central doorway, while to the right is a small shop front and a rendered front with an additional doorway. Above the shop fronts, there are four canted ashlar bay windows over three storeys, featuring sash windows. The two central bays have bracketed eaves and small dormer windows, while the outer bays are topped with curved gables, each containing a pair of sashes beneath a single pediment.
