Description

The Pharmacy is a Grade II listed building located on Bell Street, dating from the late 17th century. This tall, plastered house features a steep roof and two shopfronts, standing two storeys high with attics and five windows. It has two gable chimney stacks made of red brick, with one stack located internally on the east side and the other externally on the west. At the western end, there is a small two-storey rear wing with an internal lateral stack. The building is topped with old red tile roofs and is timber-framed, plastered, and lined to resemble ashlar stone.

The front eaves are bellcast, and the canted soffit boards are supported by a broad plaster cove that returns at the corners and projects forward over each window. The windows feature 18th-century flush box sashes with moulded architraves, thick glazing bars, and 6/6 panes of crown glass. The central door has been removed, and the two early 19th-century shopfronts are now linked. The western shopfront is pilastered and has a continuous entablature supported by acanthus-decorated brackets, with the plinth breaking forward under the pilasters. It also has a narrow panelled soffit to a continuous cornice. The eastern shopfront has similar pilasters and details but features plain scrolled brackets. The attics are lit at the front by one gabled dormer, with leaded-light wooden casements in this dormer and the window on the west gable. The building is prominent when entering the town from the west.
