Description

The Beehive Hotel is a public house built in 1902 by J. Oswald and Sons. The building features a faience ground floor and brick upper levels with ashlar dressings, topped by a roof of plain tiles and a copper dome. It stands four storeys high, with one bay facing Cloth Market and three bays on the left return towards High Bridge.

The entrance includes a six-panelled door on the right, set beneath a triglyph frieze, with a similar door located in the left canted corner. The ground floor is decorated in green and yellow, showcasing panelled and garlanded Ionic pilasters that support an entablature with a leaf-bracketed frieze. The original name "BEEHIVE HOTEL" is displayed in low relief on the fascia beneath a prominent cornice.

The upper floors are characterized by ovolo-moulded stone mullioned and transomed windows, with cornices on the first and second floors. A sash window is present on the third floor beneath wide eaves. The canted corner features a blank first floor with wrought iron brackets that hold a renewed hanging sign, and a sash window on the second floor. The top window has consoles and slightly projects from the façade.

Additionally, the pilastered angle turret includes open arches beneath roundels and a frieze, topped with an ogee dome that has four very small lucarnes with slender swept pyramid roofs and a tall spike finial.
