Description
Nos. 35 and 37 Groat Market is a house and shops, now used as shops and offices, dating from the mid-18th century, with 20th-century shopfronts. The building features incised stucco and a Welsh slate roof with brick chimneys. It has three storeys and five bays, with a central passage leading to a rear yard. The shopfronts have been renewed, and the entrance to the offices above on the right end has a hardboard-covered door with an overlight and a round pilaster to the right. The upper floors have 2-light casements, with those on the first floor featuring a semicircular glazing bar in the top light and moulded sills. The second-floor sills project, and all windows have wedge stone lintels carved to suggest alternately-projecting voussoirs. There is a band on the second floor and a 17th-century rubbed brick arch with a keystone in the passage to the rear. Inside, the staircase has splat-balustered upper flights, and there is delicate rococo stucco decoration in the first-floor room, which is now subdivided, and on a panel in the hall.
