Description
The Old George Public House is an early 17th century house that has undergone significant alterations in the 18th and early 19th centuries. The building is primarily constructed of brick, which is mostly rendered and partially painted, with rubble stone at the rear and under the arch. It features Welsh slate roofs.
The facade is divided into three parts: the western section has three storeys and two windows, while the central section has two storeys and three windows, both of which are stuccoed. To the south-east, there is an irregular two-storey section made of painted brick above a carriage arch. The entrance includes two six-panel doors set in pedimented doorcases. The windows are sash style with glazing bars, including four tripartite windows. The arch is supported by stout beams, with rubble walls beneath that contain two segment-headed doorways. The roofs are high-pitched, except for the third section.
The long, irregular rear elevation is made of large rubble stonework, with some areas patched. One original window surround remains, along with a large chimney breast that contains a wide fireplace featuring a shallow segmental chamfered stone arch with rounded corners and slightly vermiculate voussoirs. The main rooms on both floors have stout, fairly close-set joists, likely from the early 18th century. The bar at the east end has stout, shallow joists that are probably original. The roofs were renewed in the 18th century.
