Description
Nos. 43 and 45 Grey Street are shops and houses, now used as shops and offices, built around 1837, likely designed by John Wardle for Richard Grainger. The building is constructed of sandstone ashlar and features a Welsh slate roof. It has four storeys and attics, with six bays. The ground floor is rusticated and includes a panelled double door on the right, which is topped by a large overlight; the shop windows have been altered in the 20th century. There is a ground-floor entablature with a modillioned cornice. The upper floors have sash windows, some with glazing bars, set in architraves. The second-floor windows have bracketed sills and are located beneath a second-floor entablature with a prominent cornice. The plain third-floor sashes are situated under the top cornice. The roof features an inserted mansard with square-headed windows, and there are ashlar-corniced ridge chimneys. The building is noted for its importance within the fine street group.
