Description
No. 14 Shakespeare Street is a building that dates from around 1836, likely designed by John Wardle for Richard Grainger. Originally two houses, it has been converted into a single property currently used for shop and office purposes. The structure is made of sandstone ashlar and features a roof covered with Welsh slate. It stands four storeys high and has six bays, with the central four bays recessed on the upper floors.
The ground floor is characterized by flat Tuscan pilasters and plain windows. The original door has been removed, and the overlight has been blocked. The upper floors have sash windows with glazing bars, where the central bays and the top floor have plain reveals, while the outer bays feature architraves with pediments on the first floor and paired sill brackets on the second. The central four bays also have Tuscan pilasters and an entablature on the first floor, along with a sill string on the second. The building is capped with a top band and cornice, and has brick chimneys on the central and right sides.
