Description
Nos. 1 and 3 Market Street are shops and houses, now used as restaurants and offices. They were built around 1837 by Benjamin Green for Richard Grainger and are part of the left return of the Theatre Royal in Grey Street. The buildings are constructed of sandstone ashlar and have a Welsh slate roof. The restaurants feature curved shop windows from around 1900, which are adorned with slender pilasters, leaded upper lights, and round heads, flanking central recessed glazed doors. The central office entrance includes a panelled double door with an overlight that has glazing bars. The upper floors display a giant Tuscan Order on the two right bays, which project slightly. All windows have architraves; those in the two right bays have cornices on the first floor and projecting stone sills on the second floor. There is a second-floor entablature, and the top sashes have plain reveals under an eaves band and cornice.
