Description
The Adelphi Hotel is a building located on Shakespeare Street in Newcastle upon Tyne, dating from around 1836 and likely designed by John Wardle for Richard Grainger. It is constructed of sandstone ashlar, with the ground floor featuring white faience added around 1900, and has a Welsh slate roof. The hotel stands four storeys tall, with a fifth storey added later, and consists of six bays. The ground floor has entrances in the side bays leading to the public house, while the left bay contains an office with a renewed door. The second and third floors have sash windows with glazing bars set in plain reveals, although the first floor has renewed windows. There is a sill band at the second floor, along with an entablature above it. The third floor features a lintel band, while the fourth floor has raised surrounds and cornices around the windows. The building is included for its group value.
