Description
Nos 46 and 48 on Pilgrim Street are three shops and houses built around 1839 for Richard Grainger. The buildings are made of sandstone ashlar with a Welsh roof and brick chimneys. They rise four storeys and have five bays, with the three bays on the right featuring a Giant Order. The left two bays contain a shop with a boarded house door under an overlight, and a second shop with a renewed overlight above a house door on the right. There is a cornice on the second floor over the slightly set-back left bays, which are adorned with modified Corinthian pilasters. The windows on all floors have plain reveals, with the first-floor windows being taller and featuring upper glazing bars. The third floor has flat pilasters above the Giant Order, and there is a cornice and blocking course at the top. The building has four brick chimneys, with the leftmost chimney having an ashlar cornice.
